Many couples experiencing difficulty delay divorce to have that last Christmas together as a family, research shows. According to new research divorce inquiries with family law solicitors, the Family Law Courts and community organisations dealing with Family Law and separation commonly increase more than 300% during January.
Once Christmas is over, many couples begin the process of separation and divorce, having waited to avoid ruining the festive season for family and friends. Co-operative Legal Services estimates a 332% rise in divorce inquiries during January, compared with the previous quarter. For many separating and divorcing couples, Christmas was not to blame; separation and divorce was always going to happen for a quarter of couples who delayed making the announcement.
According to research 27% of men are marginally more likely than women (23%) to hold off from instigating divorce proceedings until after a significant family event. Women are, overall more likely to raise the issue of separation and divorce and are more likely to begin raising the issue of a possible separating than men. More than half (55%) of divorced women saying this was the case, compared to a third of divorced men.
