Recent UK research suggests 82% of children were glad that their parents finally separated and divorced rather than “staying together for the sake of the kids”. Most young people who have experienced divorce do not believe parents should stay together for the sake of the children, according to a survey by the UK Family Law organisation, Resolution.
The research poll found that of those young people aged between 14 and 22 years, 82% would preferred their parents to separate and divorce if they were unhappy remaining together. The common theme coming from these children of separating couples was that it was preferable that their mum and dad separated and ultimately divorced then remaining together being unhappy and fighting.
When asked whether it was preferable to stay together “for the sake of the kids” or separate on good terms, the common theme of children of separating and divorcing parents was “Don’t stay together for a child’s sake, better to divorce than stay together for another few years and divorce on bad terms.”
The survey, released before the latest annual divorce figures from the UK Office of National Statistics, show that children want greater involvement in decisions made during the divorce process. More than 60% of those polled felt their parents had not ensured they were part of the decision-making process in their separation or divorce.
